Times tables… Reasoning not remembering

Helping your child to learn their tables will help them in so many aspects of maths. There is a big emphasis on being able to recite times tables quickly and off by heart - especially as children approach Year 4 and are faced with the government driven ‘Times Table Test’ in June.

However, this rote learning does not suit everyone and you may find your child is struggling with recalling times tables - or maybe they remember them one day and forget the following day. This can be frustrating for you and for them and it may be a sign they need a different way to learn. We have worked with a lot of children who thrive better when they can access their times tables by ‘reasoning’ rather than ‘remembering’. We have different ways to do this so they don’t have to learn them off by heart.
