Creating a space for your child to learn

When children are working from home, maybe homework or home-schooling, the environment they are working in is so important to their concentration levels. In the same way as adults work from an office, a calm and regular area separates their ‘work’ from their ‘play’.

Try these ideas:

  • Find a quiet and calm area, where they have space for their learning materials and books

  • Keep the same area each day, so they learn this is their ‘learning zone’ to keep separate from their play zone

  • Avoid or disable distractions such as phones, TV, Alexas

  • If you can, use a board or side of a cupboard to stick any posters or prompts which may support their learning

  • Keep learning to a similar routine so they know when they start and more importantly what is expected and when they finish

  • Have regular breaks

  • This area does not always have to be an area at home. I once knew a parent who used to take her daughter to the local coffee shop for her weekend treat of a hot chocolate and they would finish her homework in the coffee shop each week, making it more fun.
